This is Dora the Explorer. Kids go mad for her.
[info]felizaturne

Is this a show designed to appeal to children whose first language is videogames ? or the other way round, priming toddlers for Xbox?

Just what is it with Dora the Explorer? For those of you without children under 10, Dora the Explorer is a pandemically successful children's cartoon that follows the magical adventures of a seven-year-old girl called Dora and her best friend, a monkey called Boots. The show is many things that drive parents nuts. It is nothing like Roobarb and Custard, the cult 1970s cartoon of blessed memory. It is horribly anodyne. It is soupily right-on. It is insanely repetitive. And its characters pronounce every syllable with the sort of enTHUSiASTic EMPHasis that makes the adult listener feel suicidal.

But kids go mad for it. Whether you like it or not, and whether you have kids or not, this stuff is worming its way deep into the collective unconscious of the next generation. And, as well as being annoying, Dora is really weird ? in an interesting way.

Here's how it works. The structure is as tight as a sonnet: three quatrains and a two-line payoff. Dora always has some sort of mission, be it waking up a sleeping rooster, going to a boring party, or returning a lost fish to his family. That mission involves going to three locations, each of which appears on a map Dora carries about her person. "I'm the map, I'm the map! I'm the map, I'm the map! I'm the ma-a-a-p!" this wretched scroll yelps as it opens. You, the viewer, are asked to tell Dora which location she needs to go to next, and off she trots.

In each location, she meets a friend and helps them overcome a problem. Her progress is soundtracked by recurring songs. Vámonos, Let's Go! sets her off and, at the end, cartoon insects with musical instruments start jamming an equally annoying number called We Did It! Everything in Dora ends with an exclamation mark.

The wildcard is Swiper the fox. This sneaky creature will appear ? wearing blue gloves and a bandido eyemask that conceals his identity from absolutely nobody ? and attempt to swipe something. If he's spotted, and Dora can shout "Swiper no swiping!" three times before he reaches his target, he will snap his fingers in frustration and exclaim, in a California stoner accent, "Oh ma-a-a-n!" If he gets there before Dora's third cry, he swipes. An object vanishes and he exclaims in horrid triumph: "You're t-o-o-o LATE!"

Ma-a-a-n, Swiper haunts my dreams. Why that incantation? And what is this motiveless swiping about, given that all he ever does is chuck the object away leaving Dora to go and pick it up? What is uniquely strange about Dora, though ? and the reason it should be an object of curiosity even to those who don't wince like Inspector Dreyfus in the Pink Panther movies every time they hear the words "I'm the map!" ? is that it is expressly modelled on a computer game.

Part of the credit sequence is even designed like a retro Nintendo game, with Frogger-style logs, rafts and crocodiles going back and forth; Dora is often collecting stars, Mario-style; she has a useless animal sidekick, just like Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog; and she has two magic helpers, a map and a backpack, that find an echo in any number of games. So video game aesthetics dominate ? but the oddest thing of all is the cursor. When you "help" identify an object in Dora's backpack, or "tell her" where the map wants her to go next, a cursor marks your (imagined) intervention. The backpack opens and a number of objects circle above it. You'll be asked: can you find the length of rope? There's a pause. Then this fat arrow-shaped cursor appears above it and makes an audible click. Well done! You found it!

Finally, there's that three-part structure. On the one hand, it mimics the shape of myths and fairytales: we have three distinct episodes of adversity, a trickster in Swiper, and a final triumph. Julia Donaldson's stories ? The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, Tiddler ? rely on near-identical structures. But it's also how computer games work: small challenges (levels or sub-levels) that are essentially variations on a theme, telescoped into a bigger story arc.

It's genuinely open to question what's going on here. Is this a show designed to appeal to children whose first language, so to speak, is video games? Or is it the other way round: a show designed to get children accustomed to clicks, cursors and modular level design ? essentially, grooming toddlers for Xbox? Or is it just a telly programme dementedly pretending to be interactive in the hope of passing muster in the digital age?

I'm baffled. But it's enough to make me wonder if, while we're earnestly scrutinising the work of avant-garde artists and the like, in the hope of finding the new hybrid forms that will shape 21st-century minds, we might be better off tuning in to kids' TV.

Absolutely Fabulous is back ? crack open the Bolly and Stolly
[info]felizaturne

Ab Fab's Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders return as Patsy and Edina to BBC for 20th anniversary specials

Fashion-mad PR guru Edina Monsoon and inebriated magazine editor Patsy Stone are to return to our screens in three new episodes of Absolutely Fabulous, the BBC has confirmed.

The award-winning comedy series will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year with three 30-minute specials picking up Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) in the present day. The other original cast members ? Julia Sawalha as Saffy, June Whitfield as Edina's mother and Jane Horrocks as Bubble ? will also reprise their roles.

In the first episode, fans will rejoin the ensemble in the midst of a life-changing experience for one ? which affects them all, the BBC said.

In the second show, Edina sets her sights on changing the career of someone described as "a very big fish indeed".

In the concluding episode, Edina and Patsy play their own very special part in the London 2012 Olympics.

Saunders said: "It's great that we are able to celebrate our 20th birthday with all the original cast. Like a good bottle of champagne we hope we have got better with time without losing any of our sparkle.

"Last week, when we started filming in dear old west London, it was as if nothing had changed. It was raining. Nevertheless, we are so happy to be working for an audience that has grown just a tiny bit older like us, but is still willing to let us fall over on TV in the name of PR."

Jon Plowman, executive producer of BBC Comedy and original producer of the Absolutely Fabulous series, said: "Viewers have been fantastically loyal in their devotion to our show, so we're really thrilled to say that it's coming back."

The sitcom aired from 1992 to 2003, with specials in 2004 and 2005.

True Blood Review: Boom Goddess?
[info]felizaturne

So, should we just call her Mantonia at this point? How about Arnie?

Either way, the most significant development to come out of  "Burning Down the House" was actually NOT the return of Eric's memory, but rather the reveal that Marnie is really driving the connection between herself and Antonia. It's not a possession, it's a "union."

And that is gonna create quite the dilemma for Bill over the final two episodes of season four.

A Royal Chokehold

After all, this is war, right? Isn't that what Bill said in response to Tara's possible death if his plan to blow up Moon Goddess went forward? It's a perfectly reasonable point of view, but will it be one he can maintain when Sookie is included among the casualties?

It's easy to take a stance when you have nothing at stake. Let's see what the King decrees on behalf of his kind if it means killing his favorite fairy.

On that note, the scene with Bill, Jess, Pam and Eric going all Reservoir Dogs to close the episode was absolutely awesome, but it did continue a frustrating trend on True Blood: the show always concludes an hour mid-scene, which is a lazy way to create a cliffhanger.

Bill, Jess, Pam and Eric

Elsewhere...

  • Let's return to Eric for a moment. Considering the effort put in this season to get Eric and Sookie together, so much of which was based on what would happen when his memory returned, was anyone else disappointed at the lack of attention paid to that seemingly major event this week?

Sookie used her fairy powers (she still is a fairy, right? There are two episodes remaining. Did the writers devour some shiny apples and forget all about this storyline?) to reignite Eric's brain, he said he still loved her... and that's was all we got? I'm actually sick of this love triangle (seriously, Sookie loves them both, we get it; either go with the threeway relationship, kill someone off or make her single), so I was happy with a focus on Marnie and the danger she has brought to Bon Temps.

But is it safe to assume the Team Eric members out there were looking for more?

  • Nice moment between the Bellefleur cousins. It seemed a bit random, as it's hard to imagine many viewers all that invested in this relationship, but I'm all for background on Terry, especially if he'll become more prominent on season five with the addition of Scott Foley.

But why did Terry leave him in the woods? Not sure how that is meant to contribute to Andy's healing. Just seemed like a plot device that will come in handy at some point over the next two weeks.

  • RIP, Tommy. And, seriously, don't you dare shift into a living person at any point. Follow that white light. Go on now.
  • I didn't really think Jess could get any hotter. But angry, anti-human, "I don't care what happens, as long as I get to kill s**t" Jess? Hotter.
  • Belief in yourself, Tara, said Holly. Find better, less cheesy and cliche-filled dialogue, says TV Fanatic.
  • Jesus may have come across as noble in his invasion of Moon Goddess, but I know better. He just wanted to get as far away from Lafayette's new hairstyle as possible.

What did everyone else think?

Casey Anthony Treated For "Obvious" Mental Problems
[info]felizaturne

Casey Anthony has "obvious mental health issues." That is obvious.

What was less clear is how and where she would treat them. Well, it appears that she is receiving professional psychiatric help at home in Florida.

She's concerned about leaving home - where she's serving probation for a check fraud conviction - but knows she needs help, a TMZ report says.

Casey Anthony MugshotCasey Anthony Mug Shot

Not healthy.

Whatever you think happened, there is a lot of work to be done here.

The solution to get the help she needs while circumventing death threats is to have a "team" of mental health professionals visit her regularly.

Casey Anthony has also employed the help of a spiritual adviser.

The 25-year-old, who was acquitted of murdering her toddler, denied killing little Caylee Anthony, but attributes her undeniably bizarre behavior when her daughter went missing in 2008 to serious mental health deficiencies.

Sources close to Anthony say she needs to cope with the "obvious trauma of losing her child." Guilty or not, spending nearly three years behind bars in solitary confinement while awaiting trial for murder didn't help.

"It messed with her head," said a source.

Casey is also bettering herself by going to college online.

BBC to debut Super Hi Vision during London Olympics
[info]felizaturne

Coverage of the Games will be shown in picture quality 16 times better than HD TV on 50ft-high screens at three UK locations

The BBC is to use next year's London Olympics to debut a new broadcasting technology, Super Hi Vision, that delivers picture quality 16 times better than high-definition television.

In 2012 the BBC intends to erect custom-built 50ft-high screens at three locations around the UK to allow the public to catch a glimpse of the future of television, although consumers will have to wait until at least 2022 before TV sets will be available on the high street.

"When you sit and watch it you really get the experience of being in seat D5 in the stadium," said Roger Mosey, director of London 2012 for the BBC, speaking at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival. "Super Hi Vision might be a better long-term prospect than 3D in some ways a it gives you the feel of being in the stadium. People are knocked out by it."

Super Hi Vision screens will be erected at the BBC's Pacific Quay building in Glasgow, Broadcasting House in London and ? subject to negotiations ? the National Media Museum in Bradford.

The BBC is likely to broadcast the Olympic opening ceremony using the technology, which employs a single camera to capture a wide shot. It has already been tested with sports such as basketball and "big stadium events".

Mosey would not be drawn on the costs of the screens, which are being custom built for the Olympics, but added that its Japanese broadcast partner, NHK, has "led on the investment".

He said the BBC trialed the technology last year to prove it could successfully work by broadcasting a Charlatans concert and the Scottish Taekwondo team to NHK in Japan.

Mosey added that Sharp is working on an 85-inch TV set using Super Hi Vision technology but that it is unlikely to be widely available until 2022.

He also said that the BBC is aiming to deliver some 3D programming for the Olympics but details were dependent on the final plans of host broadcaster OBS, which will provide footage from the various Olympic venues to all broadcasters covering the 2012 London Games.

The debut of Super Hi Vision is part of a tradition of trialing new TV technology at the Olympics.

Mosey said the BBC led the way delivering the "first properly televised" Olympic games when they were hosted in London in 1948.

The Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 was the first to use HD cameras. However, it was not until Beijing in 2008 that the BBC first broadcast in HD.

Mosey said that despite the importance of providing the best possible broadcasting London Olympic coverage across TV, radio and online for the BBC brand, there would be no editorial edict for positive coverage across the corporation.

"Panorama is Panorama and Newsnight is Newsnight," he added. "If they want to be critical about the Games they must be able to do that. Our journalism must be fearless and independent."

The BBC wouldn't be drawn on costs, although the corporation will publish figures next year. Mosey said the BBC took 437 staff to cover the Beijing Olympics, while US broadcaster NBC took 2,850.

After a stint in prison for selling weed to a uniformed police officer, Ned?s girlfriend leaves him and he?s forced to look to his family for help.
